How To Use Classic Blue – Pantone's Colour Of The Year 2020

January 31, 2020

Every year Pantone announces their Colour of The Year. 2020 is going to be all about Classic Blue. By comparison to the last few years, it's definitely a more palatable colour. Pantone's previous offerings of Ultra Violet (a step too far for most) to last years Living Coral, a colour I personally liked but still contentious, Pantone appears to have played it safe this year. Considering blue happens to be by far the most liked colour in the western world, it's not really going to be kicking up a storm when it comes to introducing it into our homes.

Whilst the design experts are complaining Pantone has played it too safe, you may very well appreciate Classic Blue. And as I've written before, trends are really just a means to introduce/guide us to potential possibilities and are not set in stone. They should be a consideration, a chance torethink and assess ourdecor choices should we be looking. After all, colour is such a contentious subject to draw upon as it evokes different emotions and reactions to different people. For me personally, I'm not an advocate of blue in my own home, but it may well be something you might favour.

Having written an in-depth post on using blue in our homes here, I thought, we'd take a look at the inevitable offerings available in terms of decor and design pieces today. I have to say my inbox has been inundated with the possibilities of its use!

"We are living in a time that requires trust and faith," she added. "It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on."

Naturally Complimentary…

Look no further than the colour wheel, when pairing up Classic Blue with its natural complementary colour. Blue sits directly opposite orange, making it the perfect partner when choosing a colour scheme. It's a bold and fun colour scheme to introduce although it can be overwhelming for some. Consider using in smaller doses to highlight focal areas such as the kitchen island above.

Classic Blue – Jewel Tones

Classic Blue when you think about it has been creeping into our homes as part of a resurgence in jewel-like colour palettes, and darker styled interiors for a while now so offers a sense of familiarity. Throw in some metallic textures and you'll create a feeling of luxury and decadence.

Alternative To Black…

Whilst there's a myriad of blues to choose from, Classic Blue is that in-between paintbox blue we loved as a child and the darker inky blues that are the perfect alternative to going over to the dark side without committing to black.

The monochromatic use of Classic Blue for the kitchen above helps create the illusion of space as lines of furniture and walls are less defined. The patterned floor lifts this scheme, adding interest. Using one colour to decorate is a great way to make a room/rooms feel larger if you're lacking in space.

"A boundless blue evocative of the vast and infinite evening sky, Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue encourages us to look beyond the obvious to expand our thinking; challenging us to think more deeply, increase our perspective and open the flow of communication."

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of Pantone Color Institute.

Our natural association with blue and water which makes bathrooms the perfect room to introduce Classic Blue to. Keep things simple with white sanitaryware and tiles and accessorise with towels.

And don't think you have to stick to just Classic Blue either. Add a spectrum of blues into the mix and you'll create more interest with variety.

Perfect Pairings…

Consider pairing Classic Blue with on-trend pinks. Whether you opt for jewel-like fuschia or softer more popular blush pinks, they compliment each other perfectly.

Blue inevitably stands proud when paired with neutral colour schemes. Classic Blue sits nicely between formal-looking navy and lighter softer blues making it ideal for modern contemporary spaces. Allowing you to introduce colour and pattern easily with art or accessories especially if you invest in larger pieces of furniture like sofas and/or chairs. Snug Shack who I have written about before here, has introduced their Classic Blue to their range and it looks rather fabulous don't you think?!

Design Tip: Consider choosing a similar colour sofa to that of your walls. This is particularly good for smaller spaces as it unifies the room making it look larger.
